Work for us

Volunteer opportunities

Volunteers play an important role in the Trust by providing non-clinical support to our healthcare professionals.  Anyone over the age of 18 who has some spare time can apply. We recruit members of the public from a wide range of backgrounds for a variety of rewarding opportunities.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering, please contact Steve Osgathorp on 020 8682 6895 or email stephen.osgathorp@swlstg-tr.nhs.uk

Why do people volunteer?

There are many reasons:

  • to fill their spare time
  • to meet people and make new friends
  • to gain experience of the NHS

Supporting your local NHS Trust can be enjoyable and rewarding!

So, who volunteers?

Volunteers come from all walks of life and many ethnic backgrounds. The minimum age is 18 and there is no upper limit, as long as you are in good health.

How soon could I start?

The vetting procedure will take approximately four weeks to complete after your initial interview and will include clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau, health checks and character references.

How much time can I give?

As much time as you can spare. However, we suggest that three hours per week is a good starting point, depending on the type of voluntary work you choose.

What type of voluntary work could I do?

  • working on the wards with patients under the supervision of an occupational therapist or activity nurse
  • administration and clerical work

Will I be out of pocket through volunteering?

No, we will reimburse a reasonable amount of travelling expenses.

How long can I do voluntary work?

Obviously, we want you to stay with us as long as possible but a minimum of six months is desirable. When you have completed six months or more, we are happy to provide a reference for you for future college courses or employment, if required.
