A prestigious award has been presented to the Trust’s Director of Therapies, Mary Morley, in recognition of the outstanding contribution she has made during her career.
Mary was one of five health professionals presented with a Fellowship award by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) at its recent annual conference. The Fellowship award is the highest honour the COT can bestow on one of its professional members.
Mary said: “I am delighted to receive this award from my professional peers. It is an endorsement of the occupational therapy strategy developed in the Trust by occupational therapists, managers and service users. I am grateful for their vision, creativity and commitment.”
Mary joined South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, which serves the boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth, in 2001 as Director of Occupational Therapy. Earlier this year, she was appointed as the Trust’s Director of Therapies, a role designed to ensure that our practice is evidence-based wherever possible, that staff are highly trained and that the Trust has in place a career structure for the advancement of clinical staff who wish to remain in clinical practice.
Mary has served as a professional representative on a wide range of initiatives. Her commitment to extending the evidence base for occupational therapy has led to the introduction of the first ever networked electronic standardised assessments. These are now being adopted in other mental health Trusts. She has also combined her passion for research and staff development to develop a model of preceptorship to support newly qualified practitioners. The study has been published by the COT and is being implemented in NHS Trusts across the country.
