South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (the Trust) has been working in partnership with Merton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), using national best practice, to improve the 'step down' support available for patients after they are well enough to move out of inpatient mental health services.
The Trust has been working with a wide range of stakeholders including the local community, patients, carers, clinicians and partners to develop a service which empowers patients to take much more control over their own care and treatment. This new service will help people with mental health problems receive the right care, in the right place at the right time by supporting their recovery in the community.
A robust procurement exercise was carried out to find a suitable partner that could help provide the step down service. After inviting bids through an open advertised competition, and following a detailed panel review, Beecholme Adult Care was named as the preferred provider.
The Trust, supported by Merton CCG, has been working closely with Beecholme Adult Care to get the new service ready for the Merton patients. The service is set to commence on 1 April 2016 and will enable good quality and access to care for patients.
The new step down premises have been recently renovated, providing a modern and homely feel. All bedrooms are en-suite helping to provide privacy and dignity.
The service will also feature a Structured Community Support Service which will promote recovery for people who have been discharged from the 24/7 step down care but may need additional support to help their mental health recovery. This can be in the form of employment, welfare or housing-related support or enabling individuals to access local community services, such as volunteering or training opportunities.
