Pioneering Mental Health Trust celebrates winning national ‘Nursing in Mental Health’ award at prestigious Nursing Times Awards

Pioneering Mental Health Trust celebrates winning national ‘Nursing in Mental Health’ award at prestigious Nursing Times Awards

On Thursday 2 November South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) celebrated a double win at the prestigious Nursing Times Awards.

The Lotus Assessment Suite won the Nursing in Mental Health Award and our Wandsworth Behaviour and Communication Support Service (BACSS) was shortlisted  in the Care of Older People Award.

The Trust’s Psychiatric Decision Unit, The Lotus Assessment Suite, which was opened by Justine Greening MP in November 2016, is an innovative new unit which helps to improve the overall experience of mental health patients in crisis reducing the demand on A&E departments locally and provides an alternative to hospital admission.

The unit offers a safe and calm environment for those in crisis away from A&E. This allows mental health staff to undertake in-depth and informed assessments of more complex patients who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Now in their 27th year, the Nursing Times Awards represent true excellence in nursing and patient care, offering much-deserved recognition for the innovative and excellent care that nurses at all levels provide across the UK.

Chief Executive, David Bradley, said:

"We are incredibly proud of these two teams and are delighted that the excellent innovation and hard work of our staff has been recognised in this way.

“Our BACSS service goes from strength to strength each year providing support for care home staff tp manage challenging behaviour in older people; and, since it opened last year, the Lotus Assessment Suite has provided our patients with a safe, calm environment away from the high stimulus environment of A&E, giving our clinicians the time and space they need to make informed decisions and to agree follow up support”
