National Deaf Services has a commitment to the employment and professional training of Deaf staff, which currently account for more than one-third of our team. It is intended to extend the contribution of Deaf staff much further, with a target of at least 50 per cent.

Open days

On certain days, healthcare and related professionals are invited to spend a day with staff from both the adult and child teams.

Research and teaching

There is very little information about the needs of deaf people with mental health problems and how to treat them. Many staff at the unit are involved in research in this area.

At present it is difficult for a Deaf sign language user to gain access to any further education programme which leads to a professional qualification in health care. We, in conjunction with a leading educational institution, are working to develop a qualification tailored to the needs of Deaf people working, or wishing to work, in the care sector.

We also support the Westminster Pastoral Foundation www.wpf.org.uk training courses for Deaf counsellors.

Confidentiality

A strict code of confidentiality is adhered to by all staff. Personal information is only disclosed to staff who have a right and a need to know.
