Self-help on the Internet

The following are links to external websites offering self-help to promote mental health. South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust is not responsible for the content of external websites.

MoodGYM

MoodGYM is a free, fun, interactive program which helps to explain why we think certain things and to get to know what triggers stressful thoughts. It also offers assertiveness training and assistance in relating to those around us.

MoodGYM has shown to be effective at reducing symptoms of depression. It was set up by the Centre for Mental Health Research (CMHR) at the Australian National University and offers a type of cognitive behaviour therapy.

In order to use the MoodGYM you have to register first. Registration is free of charge and simple, and you do not have to give your real name.

Here to Help

An online resource set up and funded by Canada’s Provincial Health Services Authority. This is quality information, resources and personal stories that can help you to make decisions about your mental health. The site also includes interactive resources, worksheets and self-help manuals targeted at specific disorders and problems:

Managing Mental Disorders
An interactive toolkit to help those who already know that they have a mental disorder prevent a relapse.  Learn to spot your early warning signs and develop an action plan to avoid a return or worsening of symptoms leading to a repeat episode of the disorder. You can view the toolkit online or order a hard copy.

Managing Problem Substance Use
A series of worksheets and guidelines designed to help individuals and families struggling with problems relating to alcohol or other drug use.

Managing Anxiety Disorders
A comprehensive manual which includes quizzes and games, for those suffering from anxiety.

Managing Depression
A self-help tool tailored for those with a diagnosis of depression or other mood disorders.

Wellness Modules
A useful resource promoting general wellbeing to help us cope with everyday life. Everyone can benefit from this series of worksheets on stress management, exercise, nutrition, emotions, relationships and thinking patterns.

Supporting a Family Member
When a family member suffers from a mental illness, it can be easy to feel powerless. But by educating yourself about the mental or substance use disorder, you can take an active role in your family member’s recovery.
