Springfield Garden Village

Get the latest news on Springfield Garden Village

Springfield Garden Village is the Trust's plan for the future of its 168-year-old headquarters at Springfield University Hospital in Tooting.

The planning application is now available to read in full on Wandsworth Borough Council's website. Your feedback is welcomed.

The proposals will provide around £100m of brand new mental health facilities for local and national NHS services and refurbish the site's listed buildings by constructing new homes and new commercial, leisure and community facilities on the site.

  • Ranked in the top six of new London developments by Think London.
  • Cited as an example of best practice in masterplanning for health by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and Architecture and Design Scotland.

Reasons for regenerating Springfield:

  1. To provide world class mental health facilities that maintain Springfield's high standards of care.
  2. To conserve the site's heritage buildings.
  3. To improve the layout of the site, make it more welcoming and easier to navigate.
  4. To improve transport links to Springfield.
  5. To provide modern infrastructure (water, waste, energy) that is more efficient and more reliable.
  6. To provide valuable amenities such as community and leisure facilities that improve health and wellbeing.

So what is the plan?
The plan is to deliver the six points above by creating a mixed use development at Springfield that is inspired by the 'garden village' approach to urban design. A "mixed-use development" is one that combines new homes with a range of other uses (such as health, leisure, retail and community facilities), creating an attractive, vibrant and sustainable new community.

What will the new Springfield be like?
The regeneration of Springfield will bring significant improvements to the site. As well as providing world class mental health facilities, it will have well planned and well lit streets and pathways, restored heritage buildings, new homes, a small number of shops, a cafe/restaurant, new bus stops, new bike facilities, car club spaces, restored heritage gardens, a large public park with a lake, playgrounds, a nursery, a gym and the potential for a community facility, a new primary school and a GP surgery. It will also lead to the 're-greening' of a number of areas, creating a total of 19 hectares of parks and gardens.

What is happening now?
The Trust has put together a 'masterplan' for Springfield's regeneration with the help of an expert team of planners and architects. Permission is being sought from the local authority, Wandsworth Borough Council, through an outline planning application.
