Training for doctors

South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and its partners have a reputation for providing high quality psychiatric training. This is because we:

  • value medical education
  • use excellent trainers
  • have close links with the department of mental health at St George’s University of London.

Many trainees are eventually appointed as Trust consultants, illustrating the success of our training.

Core training

The Trust scheme has approximately 46 ST1-3 posts and four FTSTA posts based at a number of sites in South West London. The posts are divided into two sub-rotations.  Trainees join one of these rotations and circulate between posts every six months.

The posts include the following specialties:

  • general adult psychiatry
  • old age psychiatry
  • child and adolescent psychiatry
  • psychotherapy
  • psychiatry of learning disability
  • forensic psychiatry.

Higher training

Trainees at the ST4-6 level join St George’s University of London’s specialty schemes. These rotate around a wide geographical area to ensure a variety of training experiences. There are higher training schemes in:

  • general adult and old age psychiatry
  • child and adolescent psychiatry
  • forensic psychiatry
  • learning disability
  • psychotherapy.

All higher trainees have the opportunity to increase their teaching experience, particularly in the supervision of medical students from St George’s University of London. The medial school delivers training for those involved in teaching, including a teaching skills course, which is free to local trainees.
