The Self-Management Programme (SMP)

"I found the easy steps led me through my own maze of depression to a clearer view of my illness and the future"

Chris Maher, SMP participant

What is the SMP?

The aim of the SMP is to help participants to build the skills, knowledge and self belief needed to effectively manage their depression. It is hoped that participants will be able to leave the programme feeling more confident to work collaboratively with their health care professionals to achieve their personal goals and ambitions.

The SMP is free and open to anyone living in Wandsworth who experiences recurrent or persistent depression. The programme consists of weekly three-hour sessions over seven weeks. These are group sessions of approximately 9-12 people.

Tutor training

The SMP is delivered by a lay tutor (i.e. someone who has experience of self management and depression) and a health professional (i.e. a community psychiatric nurse). You do not have to have attended the SMP to become a lay tutor, however it is advisable.
