Action learning sets

Why action learning sets?

Action learning sets are intended to support clinicians in maintaining the momentum for learning, action and change after they have completed the four sessions of the Advanced Development Programme. It often takes 6-12 months to learn new techniques and skills that can be put into practice in the workplace. Action learning supports and accelerates that process.

What is an action learning set?

An action learning set is a group of preferably no more than eight people, who meet regularly to give each person a time and space for questioning, reflection and action planning. While action learning has no firm rules, it thrives under the following conditions:

  • real issues are worked on.
  • set members work together to share perspectives, discuss any issues and explore what to do next.
  • individuals take action in the light of new insight and feedback to the group how this went

Action learning sets will take the form of three one-and-a-half hour sessions facilitated by local healthcare professionals who will be trained in action learning techniques as part of the initiative’s Training for Trainers Programme.
